Goodwin's Analysis - Things We May Need To Consider

Andrew Goodwin writing in 'Dancing in the Distraction Factory' (Routledge 1992)

  1. Music Videos demonstrate genre characteristics (eg. stage performance in a metal music video and a dance routine in a boy/girl band music video)
  2. There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting)
  3. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups which the artist. The artist may also develop motifs which reoccur across their work (a visual style)
  4. There is frequently refernece to ntion of looking (screen within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic* treatment of the female body
  5. There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programs, other music videos, etc)

*Voyeurism - is the pleasure of looking at someone who is unaware of being looked at (in the imaginary world)
